So every year, my family and I stay in Carlsbad, California. And we have this tradition, my favorite part of the vacation, where we ride our bikes to the coaster, then take the coaster to the ferry in San Diego. The ferry then takes us to Coronado and we ride our bikes around the island, then we get lunch and hang out at the beach before we head back home. It's a day trip worth taking if you are ever in the San Diego area! I'm here to tell our tips and tricks to make the trip a successful one, full of stress-free bike riding and beautiful scenery around you.
1. go here to look at the coaster times to get on the coaster, find the different stopping points and find out how you can get to the San Diego-SF depot stop(that's the stop you want to get off at).
2. use a smart phone or map to find out how to get from the San Diego-SF station to the ferry. It is only a 5 minute bike ride or so. You can practically see the ferry station when you get off the coaster.
3.Once you get to Coronado, there are a number of things you can do. Our favorite lunch spot is a Mexican food place called Miguel's. It is A-MAZING. Next, we head over to our favorite dessert stop, which is Clayton's Coffee Shop. Which is where we get fabulous/huge milkshakes, which are delicious!
4. One of my favorite parts is riding our bikes around and looking at all the houses. We ride through neighborhoods and love to dream about the beach house we might own there one day!
5. Tip for getting bikes onto the coasters: only certain entrances onto the coaster allow bikes. Make sure to look for the bike symbol next to the doors of the coaster. Out of 5 doors, 2 or 3 will allow bikes. So if you have a larger group, like we usually do, split up when getting on the coaster, because you won't be able to get 5+ bikes into one door in the minute that the coaster is stopped.
6. Always make sure you know the times for the coaster and ferry for when you travel home. You don't want to miss one of them and be stuck with no place to sleep!
7.There are certain roads in Coronado that absolutely DO NOT allow bikes to be ridden on. When you first get to the island, I suggest you stop at a local store (we usually go to the nearest bike rental shop) and ask for a map of the island. The map will indicate which roads allow bikes and which ones do not. You can also use the map to lead you to the bike path that goes all the way around the island!
8. When in doubt, go to Orange St. The main street on the island is Orange St. So, if you want to go shopping or find somewhere to eat, this is the street to go to. p.s. this is a no bike riding street, which means you will have to walk your bike up and down this street, or lock it up on a bike rack.
9. And of course, make sure to look around and TAKE PICTURES! Everywhere you look you will find a pretty picture waiting to happen.
10. Last but not least, take note of all the aircraft carriers, navy ships, jets, and helicopters. Trust me, you won't miss them. Coronado is a navy base, which completely adds to the excitement of the island!
let me know if you guys have or are going to ever take this day trip to Coronado. Comment with any questions and I will gladly answer.
p.s. what are your family vacation traditions??

If you get a chance, head over to the Coronado hotel and dream a little!
